Here is what you have been waiting for: the rules of this league, the Rad Dynasty. Now, all of you played fantasy football before, so you should know the basics. I'm not going to review how the draft works or how to set your lineups or how points or scoring works, any of that stuff. You should know that already. but just in case you're wondering what the exact scoring rules are, you can read them on the game's Yahoo page in the league settings. I don't think there's anything too crazy about the scoring rules but look em over if you want to.
The first initial draft will take place Sunday, August 27 at 3:00 PM Central.
You will have 13 starting positions to fill. If you notice anything different when looking at the positions list, you'll notice there are 2 starting tight end spots to fill. Why 2 tight ends? I've never played in a league with 2 tight ends before. Well, my thinking is that outside of the big names like Travis Kelce or Mark Andrews, the tight end position has been a somewhat barren landscape in fantasy football for a few years now. Any tight end you start outside of those few big names is going to be a gamble from the production standpoint. My thought is: if it is such a gamble why not give everyone 2 lottery tickets to find a diamond in the rough at tight end? This is a dynasty league, so some emphasis will be on drafting and developing. I've noticed in other leagues, a ton of tight ends just hanging around on the waiver wire. Rookies like Luke Musgrave or Michael Mayer may not get a lot of attention in standard redraft fantasy leagues. Here, they become vastly more important. You're not just drafting a tight ends for now, you're drafting them for the next 10 years down the road.
The next thing you'll notice about the roster positions is that instead of just picking a team defense, as you often see in standard redraft leagues, you have 4 individual defensive player positions to fill. In addition to including one player for each level of the defense (DL, LB, and DB), I also included a wild card defensive player, where you can plug in a player regardless of their position. Again, I'm trying to stress the dynasty and the longevity aspect of this league, as the flexibility among defensive positions really allows you find that star defensive player that is going to put up points, regardless of the position they play. if you get lucky enough to land several of these big time defensive players, more power to you. As in most fantasy leagues, having a great offense is the key to winning, but putting together a hard hitting defense could give you that added boost or edge you really need.
In addition to these 13 starters, you will have 12 bench spots. That makes a 25 man roster. The draft will be 25 rounds. It's a bit long, I know, but after this year the draft will be much, much shorter in subsequent seasons. You also have 2 injury list spots on your roster, so theoretically you could carry as many as 27 players at 1 time once free agency and waiver period opens.
This is a dynasty league, so I'll discuss what that entails, as I know some of you have never played dynasty before. It's a little different in the sense that you are drafting a team not only for this season, but to be competitive for several years to come. In a standard redraft league, quarterbacks often don't go in the first few rounds. in a league like this, if you draft a stud quarterback, you're drafting him for his entire career. Patrick Mahomes is 27. If you draft him, you're probably getting 10 years of elite production from him. If you draft Derrick Henry, you've probably only got a couple of years left of elite production - if that. Normally Henry would get drafted far, far ahead of Mahomes in a standard redraft league. But here, the better bet long term may be to go after someone like Mahomes. I'll let you guys decide how you want to attack things
This applies not only to the quarterback position, but all across the league. Do you go after the aging veteran who is going to put up big numbers for a season or 2, or do you go for younger players with potential that haven't really proven much yet, but are predicted to be massive stars in the league for years to come. Tyreek Hill or Garrett Wilson - that kind of conundrum. I suppose some drafters will come in with 1 of 2 extreme mentalities:
1. Draft to win now and draft players regardless of their age and forget about the future
2. Stock up the team with young talent and maybe not win now, but put yourself in a position to be competitive for years to come.
I am going to try to aim for option 3: both!
The season ends with 4 of the 12 teams making the playoffs. Omly 4 teams is kind of brutal - as I'm sure teams with winning records are going to be left out of the postseason. But that is sort of the point. if you want to win this league, you have to have a truly elite team. Only the best of the best teams will win the title. Some team with a 6-8 record probably isn't going to win the title. I want every game to count, and every week to be a massive battle.
If there is a tie for playoff positioning, the tiebreaker will be determined based on head to head regular season record if the tie is between 2 teams. If these teams tied 1-1 in the regular season, then it will come down to total points scored. If 3 or more teams are involved in a playoff positioning tie, the tiebreaker will automatically be points scored. I don't want to get into any confusing situations where team a beat team b, but team c beat team a and lost to team b... etc scenarios.
There will be a small prize each year for winning the league. Don't expect anything too great. I can guarantee you it is going to be something cheap and funny - but something to remember the season by.
Since this is a dynasty, You will be allowed to carry a minimum of 15 and a maximum of 20 players over from your roster next season. It's up to you. I'll set a deadline as to when I need your keepers after the season ends. I am thinking they are going to be due by August next year. But we'll worry about that later. Before next season begins, we'll hold another draft where your rosters will again be stocked from 15 or 20 back up to 25 players. This draft will consist of the remaining unrostered players combined with incoming rookies. The more players you carry over, the fewer picks you get in the draft. So for example if you carry the full 20 over, you only get 5 draft picks. If you carry 15 over, you get 10 draft picks. Don't worry about being "penalized" for carrying a high number of players over. The picks you lose are late round draft picks. Every single team, regardless of how many players they carry over, will pick in the first 5 rounds of next year's draft. Those who carried over fewer players simply get more later round picks. This all might be a little much info to take in right now, so I'll make sure I remind everyone of how this works next season. It's nothing to worry too much about now, unless you're already thinking of who you want to draft long-term.
Trades are allowed in this league. I am the only one with veto power over trades. Most trades will be allowed, unless it is something ridiculous or 1 sided. If I see a pending trade between teams for a kicker and a starting RB - I am vetoing it. so don't even try it. Trades of players and future draft picks are allowed. If your team sucks you can "sell" players on your team for draft picks next year in order to restock your cabinet. Again, don't put forth any 1 sided trades or I will veto them.
Next years draft will work like the NFL draft in that it is not a snake format. The team with the worst record in the regular season has the #1 pick in next year's draft. The second worst has the #2 pick, etc - all the way to the champion with the last pick of the first round. The order will repeat in the 2nd round rather than snake. Tiebreakers will work the opposite of playoff tiebreakers. The worst team in points or head to head matchups will get the better draft pick.
Tanking is allowed to a degree. If you purposely leave a bunch of spots on your roster empty, this is not acceptable and I will penalize you by knocking you back in the draft as if you won the game or games you threw. Tanking is acceptable if done the right way. When you take out your A squad players and put in your B players in an attempt to lose intentionally. At least you are filling positions on your roster and not cheating the system, so to speak.
I also want you to know that consolation postseason games are absolutely meaningless to me - so if you win them or throw them it makes no difference in the end. You are not going to get a better draft pick if you lose a consolation game, so why not try to win them? That is how I will look at it.
In the event someone goes inactive in this league, they will be replaced next season. This is meant to be a highly competitive league with no easy weeks or dud opponents who haven't bothered to set their lineup. Conversely, if someone wishes to withdraw from the league, they will be replaced in the offseason. Just please let me know so I have time to replace you.
When a new manager joins the league to replace an old manager, they will have 2 options: take over the team as/is and pick up where the old manager left off - or tear things down and join an expansion draft. If they choose this option, all managers in the league will only be allowed to carry 15 to 17 players over next season, as opposed to 15 to 20. The new team will have their pick of 15 to 17 unrostered players to add to their team. They can NOT add incoming rookie players to the team. After they've made their picks, the standard draft will begin, where all teams will participate and bring their rosters back up to 25 players, picking from rookies and unrostered players alike
This is so much to take in, and even still I am sure there are a lot of other small rules about the game that I am probably forgetting. I hope I'm not throwing too much at you. It really is not that complicated. I'll explain everything step by step as it happens. As I said, I want this to be a fun and inviting league for everyone. I wouldn't have invited you to play if you were not important to me in some way. I'm so excited to see where this league goes over the years - who wins, who fizzles out. If anyone is able to build a true dynasty. I do plan to expand the number of teams to 14 when my son Channing is old enough to play. there are some other people in my friend and family circle I'd like to get involved in this too. As soon as the league goes up to 14 teams, I'll expand the playoffs to 6 teams getting in rather than 4, but that is far down the road.
If you ever have any questions about how this will play out, don't hesitate to text me or message me online. Whatever is easiest for you. Or you can email me at danra1782@gmail.com.
I guess I am going to end this now.
